MISSION STATEMENT

The 48th Alabama Infantry Reenactors is a non-profit living history group, dedicated to the portrayal of the life of the Civil War soldier and 1860’s period civilians, with the emphasis on a mid to late War impression of the men of the 48th Alabama Volunteer Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia . We are a family-oriented group that encourages the participation of our member’s wives and children.

We offer three types of membership: Soldier members - those who portray soldiers and participate in battles; Civilian members - those who portray civilians at events; and Associate members - people who do not reenact, but wish to support the group and receive our monthly newsletter, "The Fortykin".

The 48th Alabama is a large and growing unit - we currently have over 60 members from all over the State of Alabama, from Heflin to Tuscaloosa and as far north as the Tennessee line. Though most of our membership comes from northeast Alabama, some of our members live in Georgia, and we have associate members all across the nation, from South Carolina to California.

We participate throughout the year in many battle reenactments, living history programs, memorial services, parades, and school presentations. Nearly all of our activities are held on weekends, and generally during the "good weather" months of March, April, May, June, September and October. Members participate as frequently as they wish or are able to do so. Most of the events we attend are in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee, but, we try to make one trip a year to the eastern theater of the War - Virginia, Maryland or Pennsylvania.

Though we are very serious in the field, in camp we are relaxed and laid back, and enjoy one another’s company. We are not a strict military outfit, and no one is ever required to do anything they do not want to do.

The 48th actively seeks new members. We are willing to assist anyone with an interest in reenacting. Many of us have extra equipment that a new recruit may borrow until he can acquire the gear he may need. We encourage people to "try out" the unit for a weekend - we’ll outfit them for an event to see if reenacting is something they want to pursue.

Civil War reenacting is a hobby that offers unique experiences, and is both fun and educational for the entire family. The 48th Alabama would love for you to be a part of the hobby, and a part of us.
